What does punalua mean?

Punalua is a word the Hawaiians used before the missionaries came and turned them xian. It means an ‘intimate friend’ and was used to refer to your lover’s lover, or your wife’s lover, etc. It was a position of respect and love. Steve found it in some anthropology research.
