I wish I was hardcore enough — or healthy enough — to do this kind of work and I have nothing but respect for the DPW people who were out on the playa so late in the year. I hope my current version of the lexicon entry reflects how hard they work.

Yeah, people were doing clean up this year until gosh 4 days ago or so? Usually it ends around Oct 10th or 15th or something but since it rained so much out there right before the BLM inspection, they finished it in a shallow lake rather than the dusty playa. And much later than normal. But of course still doing an awesome job.

What kind of work are people doing at the DPW at this late date? Is it still cleanup?

Correction:

“Then they remain after the event for up to a month to return the desert to pristine condition.”

Many remain for more than a month, in fact as I write this on Oct 19th, there are still DPW on the playa. And some must stay to maintain the permanent infrastructure in Gerlach and at the ranch.
