Career (& Reader Feedback)

Posted in Life, and Sex Toys

My poly family have all been job searching recently, and so I have looked at Craigslist along with them from time to time. I have one very steady freelance client, but I am not rolling in money by any means and needed to diversify anyway. I didn’t put a ton of effort into my applications — when I heard back from one, the interviewer told me “I couldn’t open your résumé,” and I thought to myself that’s because I didn’t attach one.

When she wanted me to send her one, I realized now I need to write a résumé; I’d been relying on word of mouth and networking. In the process of writing one and creating my new LinkedIn account, I came to a startling realization: I actually have the beginnings of a real career as a writer. It is a little like suddenly realizing one is a grown up (at age 33).

It feels weird because for a long time I didn’t have a lot of direction — I was just scrambling to find anything I could do to make money while coping with fibromyalgia. Then for a while it felt like I was just fucking around with my words and somehow managed to sell them to a few people. Looking at my résumé showed me how much I’ve accomplished, especially in the last year!

I got hired, and now work as the Content Editor for an online sports media startup. I seem to fit in at the job, and the work is challenging in the right ways. It makes me especially pleased that my work as Burning Flipside‘s Web Content Lead not only helped me develop the skills I’ll use in this position but were a selling point for my new employer as well.

I am coming close to being able to say “I make my living through writing” and really mean it.

On an unrelated note, I received some reader feedback tonight (reprinted with permission):

You reviewed a glass dildo earlier this year.  On the basis of your
review, we ordered one.  We didn’t have a good opportunity to test it
until this evening.

It took me a good number of minutes to recover enough after the orgasm
to grab the computer so I could let you know I’m very happy with it.
Thank you for your role in that orgasm.  :)

It’s always nice to know I helped bring someone pleasure!

It’s been a month since my last sex toy review. I’ve had some hiccups in my sex toy pipeline so I’m talking to some new vendors. I do have some reviews coming; Axovus, makers of the Illuminator LED Flogger sent me their Ultimate Blindfold to try. I will post my review as soon as I can get a photo or two.
