Upcoming Zine: Beyond The Concrete Milkshake

Posted in Journalism, and Occupy Wall Street

I’m pleased to announce the upcoming publication of a new zine, “Beyond the Concrete Milkshake: Tactics for Dealing with Media Trolls & Grifters.”

At the beginning of the year, I announced on Patreon that one of my goals for 2020 was the creation of a zine. I’ve made great progress and intend to publish by late March or early April.

One side effect of the first few years of the Donald Trump administration, with all its associated increase in far-right activity, is a hijacking of Leftist tactics for use by fascist causes. One clear example is the banner drop. Once beloved primarily by far left activists, this technique now sees regular groups by nazi and hyper-nationalist fascist groups. So too it is with the media grifter.

What Is Black Bloc? Why Do Activists Wear Masks?

Posted in Creative Commons, and Journalism

Black bloc are the masked activists in matching black clothes you may have seen at protests or on TV. There are many misconceptions about black bloc, especially about who they are and why they look the way they do.

One common misconception is that antifa (antifascists) and black bloc are one and the same, or that block bloc are all members of a particular activist movement. In reality, black bloc is not a movement but a tactic that has been used by diverse groups and movements over the years. Originally developed by autonomists in Europe, black bloc tactics first came to America during the protests against the World Trade Organization, including the famous “Battle of Seattle” in 1999.

By wearing masks and near identical clothing, activists in a black bloc protect their identities while creating a sense of unity and common purpose. While acts of property destruction by masked individuals tend to receive most media attention, one of the most common purposes of a black bloc is to protect other activists from attacks by police and fascists.

Support Kit’s Journalism During The Texas Legislature Special Session

Posted in Archive, Journalism, and Website

First off, thanks as always to all my supporters!

On Tuesday, the Texas legislature will re-open for a special session in which the Republicans hope to force through a host of regressive laws targeting transgender rights, abortion access, public workers’ unions, education funding and much more.

In response, activists and organizers are forming massive coalitions and planning near daily protests, rallies, and lobbying on behalf of progressive causes. Texas, once again, will be a proving ground for both the inhumane agenda of the far right and the resistance tactics of the left.
